How many of us would dare? I applaud them, and will pray for their success.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15636692.post-42122591068349251352008-12-17T08:28:00.000-08:002008-12-17T08:28:00.000-08:00Would the U.S. get involved? Perhaps I'm cynical, but I think the U.S. government (the politicians) actually likes China's style of government.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15636692.post-71213627546686953552008-12-15T17:56:00.000-08:002008-12-15T17:56:00.000-08:00Considering the state of the world, now would be ...Considering the state of the world, now would be the perfect time for China to adopt a new form of leadership. Although if there is an uprising - would the U.S. get involved? On the contrary: they immediately arrested one of the three spokesmen of "Charta 77", Vaclav Havel who in 1989 would be the first President of Czechoslovakia after the so-called "Velvet Revolution", which brought down the communist regime.

In 1977, the communist government published in the press, all controlled by the communist party, numerous "spontaneous resolutions" of "workers" condemning the manifesto, which meant, of course, that everybody in Czechoslovakia knew about it.

It will be very interesting to see whether the communist leadership in China will react in the same way that the Czechoslovakian rulers did in 1977. I can hardly believe that they will completely ignore the manifesto, especially since the number of signatories is apparently spreading quickly. Originally it was signed by 300 intellectuals, but now, according to your source, already 500 more people have signed it.

I think it is extremely important that also government officials signed the manifesto. This is a fundamental difference between "Charter 08" and "Charta 77", which was not signed by any government official.

I see the manifesto indeed as a turning point in the history of China.

Dick Verkijk
Sandy, UT
dverkijk@juno.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
